Clareo keeps what it needs to run your account and make good picks, and nothing for advertising. This page says exactly what that is.
Who we are
Clareo is run by Clareo Technologies LLC, 1309 Coffeen Avenue, Ste 1200, Sheridan, WY 82801, USA (a Wyoming limited liability company). We are the controller of the personal data described here. For anything about your data, write to support@tryclareo.com.
What we collect
Your account
- Your email address and first name.
- Your password, stored only as a secure hash. If you sign in with Apple or Google in our mobile apps, we store the account identifier they give us instead, and for Apple an encrypted credential we use to disconnect your account if you delete it.
- Whether your email is confirmed, and security records such as failed sign-in attempts.
How you use Clareo
- The subjects you choose, your daily pace and your other settings.
- What you save, where you stopped listening, what you finish and how you rate it, and your listening time and streak.
- Activity in the app, such as which books were shown to you and what you played or skipped. We use it to improve your picks and keep it for 90 days. You can switch this off in Settings under “Learn from my activity”.
- Searches that find nothing, and books you ask us to add with “Request this book”. We use them to decide which books to add next. Other searches are not stored on our servers.
Subscriptions
If you subscribe to Clareo Plus we keep your subscription status, its dates and the reference numbers from the store that took the payment. Card and bank details go to the payment provider, never to us.
Technical data
Our servers see your IP address and basic request details. We use them to keep the service secure and working, for example to limit repeated sign-in attempts.
Why we use it
- To provide Clareo (performing our contract with you): your account, your library and progress on every device, playback, email confirmation and password resets, and subscriptions.
- To make better picks and a better library (our legitimate interest in a useful service): your activity, empty searches and book requests. You can switch activity learning off at any time.
- To keep Clareo secure (our legitimate interest, and our legal obligations): security records and technical data.
- To meet legal obligations, such as keeping financial records.
We don’t sell your data, we don’t use it for advertising, and we don’t track you across other websites or apps.
Cookies and storage
Clareo stores a few things in your browser or on your device so it can work: your session, your preferences and what is playing. We don’t use advertising or analytics cookies, so there is nothing to consent to. When you open checkout on the web, our payment provider Paddle loads its own script to process the payment.
Our mobile apps can send you one daily reminder if you allow it. It is scheduled on your device, and you can turn it off in Settings or in your device’s settings.
Who we share it with
We use a small number of providers to run Clareo. They process data only on our instructions:
- Cloud hosting, database and content delivery providers, which run our servers and deliver the audio.
- Resend, which sends our emails.
Some parties act on their own account when you use them:
- Paddle sells Clareo Plus on the web as our merchant of record and handles payment, tax and invoices under its own privacy policy.
- Apple and Google handle sign-in and purchases in our mobile apps under their own terms.
We may also share data where the law requires it, or with a successor if Clareo’s business is transferred, in which case this policy continues to apply.
Where your data is processed
Clareo Technologies LLC is based in the United States, so if you live in the European Economic Area or the UK, your data is transferred to and processed in the United States, by us and by the providers above. When it is, we rely on safeguards the law recognises, such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.
How long we keep it
- Your account, library, progress, settings, empty searches and book requests: until you delete your account.
- Activity used for picks: 90 days, or until you reset it or switch it off.
- Subscription records: as long as the law requires us to keep financial records.
- Server logs: up to 30 days.
Your rights
You can ask to see the data we hold about you, get a copy, correct it, delete it, restrict how we use it, or object to how we use it. You can do some of this yourself:
- Change your name, subjects and settings in the app.
- Switch off or reset activity learning in Settings.
- Delete your account in Settings. This deletes your data from our systems. If you have Clareo Plus, cancel it first so billing stops.
For anything else, email support@tryclareo.com. We reply within one month. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
Clareo is not meant for children. You need to be at least 16 to create an account. If you believe a child has given us data, email us and we will delete it.
Security
We protect your data with encryption in transit, hashed passwords, encrypted credentials and limited access. No system is perfectly secure, and if something goes wrong that affects you, we will tell you as the law requires.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will tell you in the app or by email before it applies. The date at the top always shows the current version.
